Asbestos HVAC duct and insulation removal in Menifee, CA

Menifee Asbestos Removal handles asbestos duct removal and asbestos insulation removal for Menifee homes, usually when an air conditioner, furnace or duct system is about to be replaced. We test the duct wrap, seam tape, register boots and closet board first, then remove what is positive inside a controlled work area before the HVAC installer starts. Asbestos HVAC duct insulation and pipe lagging are friable more often than flooring, so containment is planned around them.

In Menifee's summer heat, this work tends to come up at the worst moment, when a failing system needs replacing quickly. We cover the same duct and insulation work in Canyon Lake and Hemet.

Asbestos HVAC duct and insulation removal options in Menifee

Duct wrap and tape during AC replacement

Older ducts were sometimes wrapped in insulating paper or sealed at the joints with fabric tape that can contain asbestos. Rule 1403 counts the installation or removal of an HVAC system as renovation, so the ducts the installer will pull out need sampling first. Where results come back positive, the duct sections are wrapped or glove-bagged and taken out before the new system goes in.

Furnace and air-handler closets

Interior closets that house a furnace or air handler can contain board, gaskets or tape around the equipment and its flue. These are small quantities, but they sit right where the installer has to work. Including them in the same survey avoids a stop-work call halfway through the swap.

Attic insulation and vermiculite

Loose, pebble-like vermiculite is a specific concern because over 70 percent of US vermiculite sold from 1919 to 1990 came from the Libby, Montana mine, whose ore was contaminated. EPA advises assuming vermiculite contains asbestos, leaving it undisturbed and not storing boxes on it. Removal of attic material is scheduled for the cooler part of the day, since Menifee attics in summer are hard on workers in full protective gear.

Pipe and water-heater insulation

Wrapped hot-water lines and older water-heater or boiler jackets are thermal system insulation, and for houses finished by 1980 Cal/OSHA assumes that insulation holds asbestos unless sampling shows otherwise. Removing it is Class I work under Cal/OSHA, the most tightly controlled category, so it is usually glove-bagged or done inside a full enclosure.

Plan around summer heat and the HVAC installer

Menifee has recorded 117°F, and summer attic temperatures make long abatement shifts unsafe, so attic and duct removal is best booked early in the morning or outside peak heat where the schedule allows. If the old system has already failed in July, portable cooling for the occupied rooms is worth arranging while the work area is sealed off.

The order of work matters: survey first, then abatement, then a clearance check, and only then the HVAC crew. If 100 square feet or more of asbestos is involved, the district notification adds at least 10 working days, so it pays to test the ducts when you first start collecting AC quotes rather than after the installer has opened the system.

In a Sun City ranch house the ducts usually sit in the attic directly above sprayed ceiling texture, so one survey visit can sample both; the ceiling side is explained under asbestos popcorn ceiling removal. Flooring, manufactured homes and demolition are summarized on the Menifee Asbestos Removal homepage.
